The basics
What Is an Employee Handbook?
An employee handbook is the written heart of your working relationship: one organized document that explains company policies, expectations, benefits, and legal rights to every person on the team.
The purpose of an employee handbook
A good employee handbook removes guesswork. New hires learn how time off works, how pay is processed, and where to report a concern — on day one, not after an awkward incident. For the employer, an employee handbook creates a record that policies were published and communicated consistently to everyone.
Employee handbook vs. policy manual
A code of conduct covers behavior rules; an HR policy library covers single topics in depth. An employee handbook ties all of it together in plain language a receptionist and an engineer can both read in one sitting. That breadth is exactly why the employee handbook remains the most distributed document in HR.
Is an employee handbook legally required?
Federal law does not require a handbook as a single document, but several laws effectively require written policies — from FMLA notices for covered employers to harassment reporting channels. Many state and local rules add their own written-policy expectations. A well-drafted employee handbook is how growing companies meet those expectations in one place; this generator gives you a source-checked starting draft, not legal advice.

What Your Employee Handbook Includes

Three steps
How the Employee Handbook Generator Works
The generator is a questionnaire and a live document working side by side. There is nothing to install and nothing to wait for — click Generate and the employee handbook assembles instantly.
1. Answer a short questionnaire
Company name, where employees work, team size, work mode, and which benefits you offer. Each answer switches policy modules on or off, so the employee handbook you preview is shaped like your actual company.
2. Preview every section live
Click Generate and the document on the right becomes your real employee handbook. Edit any section inline — each edit is marked “Customized” so you know which wording you changed from the source-checked template.
3. Download DOCX or print to PDF
Export a clean Word file you can keep editing, or print the finished employee handbook straight to PDF on US Letter paper. Your draft also autosaves locally in this browser, so you can return and continue anytime.
Why it matters
Why Teams Use an Employee Handbook Generator
Most small companies put off writing an employee handbook for one reason: starting from a blank page is miserable. A generator removes the blank page and replaces it with decisions you were going to make anyway.
Everyone reads the same rules
When expectations live in one employee handbook, managers stop improvising answers and employees stop guessing. The same vacation rule, the same reporting channel, the same payday.
Onboarding that fits in a folder
A new hire who reads the employee handbook on day one reaches productivity faster — and signs an acknowledgement page that proves the company communicated its policies.
Consistency you can defend
Consistent, written policies applied equally are the foundation of fair treatment. When a dispute arises, the published employee handbook is the reference everyone turns to.
A source-checked starting point
Every legal-framed module in this generator cites the agency source it tracks and the date it was checked. That is deliberately humbler — and more honest — than templates promising fifty-state compliance.
Coverage, honestly stated
State Rules in Your Employee Handbook
Employment law is layered: federal rules set a floor, and states add their own. This generator is transparent about which layers your employee handbook actually covers.
General U.S. core, clearly labeled
The core sections use general U.S. framing — FLSA overtime principles, EEOC harassment guidance, NLRA-protected discussion rights. For states without a dedicated overlay yet, your employee handbook will say plainly that state and local requirements may add or change required language.
We will never claim your handbook is “compliant in Texas” or any other state. Where rules are uncertain, the document warns you instead of overpromising.
A real California overlay
Select California as a work state and the generator adds paid sick leave (Labor Code § 246 accrual and use rights), meal and rest break rules with premium pay references, and the SB 1343 harassment training addendum — each with its official source recorded.
City ordinances like San Francisco’s can add more. The California sections note that honestly, because an employee handbook that admits its limits is worth more than one that hides them.
